Project Planning: Designing a Better Walkway
Before breaking ground, we worked closely with the customer to map out a practical design. They wanted a natural-looking stepping stone path that would follow the right side of their home, pass through their gate, and connect to their backyard pool decking. We focused on three core goals:
- Water pooling and mud.
- Create a functional and safe access route.
- Enhance curb appeal and overall aesthetics.
Walkway Installation Process
With a clear plan in place, we got to work transforming the area. Each phase of the walkway installation was carefully executed to ensure durability, proper drainage, and a polished finish that complements the surrounding landscape.
We began by removing the old, deteriorated walkway that was contributing to drainage issues. Years of weather and foot traffic had left it uneven and ineffective. Once the existing materials were lifted, we excavated the path area to a depth that allowed for proper drainage and structural support. This step was crucial in correcting the grade and preparing a solid foundation for the new installation.
Proper Base Preparation
With the path excavated, we laid down a quarry dust base. Quarry dust is ideal for walkways because it compacts well and helps with water filtration. Installing Main Stepping Stones
Once the base was compacted and level, we moved on to the stepping stones. We used high-quality Venetian Grey stepping sandstone, selected for its durability and sleek aesthetic. The stones were laid out with careful attention to consistent spacing that matches a natural walking stride, promoting both safety and a visually pleasing rhythm.
Landscape Fabric & Smooth Stone Backfill
We laid landscape fabric to keep weeds at bay and help stabilize the base material over time. This fabric is essential in maintaining the integrity of the walkway long-term.
After the stepping stones were positioned, and landscape fabric placed, we filled the surrounding areas with 3/4″ Delaware smooth stone. This not only supports the stepping stones from shifting but also contributes to the pathway’s drainage capabilities. The rounded texture of these stones adds an additional design element and keeps the area low maintenance.
Once the smooth stone was spread evenly, we tamped it down to lock everything into place and ensure the walkway wouldn’t shift underfoot.
Finishing Touches
We made final adjustments to level support stones underneath each stepping stone, creating a sturdy and consistent walking surface.
Then, to restore the surrounding area, we seeded all disturbed soil sections and applied Penn Mulch. This helps the surrounding grass to recover quickly and prevents erosion, leaving the entire project looking clean and complete.
